Lieutenant BElanna Torres

HER EARLY YEARS
B'Elanna is half Klingon and half Human and was raised on the Federation colony of Kessic IV. Her parents separated when she was five years old and her Human father returned to Earth, never to see her again. She was raised by her fully Klingon mother. B'Elanna didn't get along with her mother, partially because she did not embrace the Klingon ways of life. She lost contact with her mother and believes she might be living on the Klingon homeworld. As a child, she always tried to hide her Klingon distinctiveness because growing up as the only half Klingon in the colony was difficult. Her forehead ridges are less pronounced but she does have the typical redundant stomach of a full Klingon. Unlike Klingons, B'Elanna does have tear ducts and can cry and appears to have only one heart.

KLINGON HERITAGE
Klingon mating customs caused B'Elanna to bite Tom on the left side of the face, thus marking him as hers. She did that while effected by Vorik's Pon Farr. Although there are likely many mating customs, the few mentioned on Voyager have been that Klingon women often throw heavy objects at their mate and that breaking a clavicle on the wedding night is considered a blessing in a Klingon marriage.
B'Elanna has revealed a dislike for traditional Klingon fare such as cold gagh and blood pie. Neelix made blood pie for her to celebrate the Day of Honor and she reluctantly ate it as well as heart of a sanctified targ, and drank mot’loch from the grail of Kahless. She did not complete the rituals of the Day of Honor which included enduring the ritual of 20 painsticks, engaging in combat with a master of the bat’leth, and then traverse the sulfur lagoons of Gorath.

STARFLEET BEGINNINGS
She was accepted to Starfleet Academy and began her tumultuous two years there before quitting. Life was difficult there: dodging punches in the lab, fighting with her professors, and almost failing interstellar history. But her brilliance in engineering caused more than one of her instructors to be sorry she left the Academy. She was sure she would have been kicked out if she hadn't quit because she had four disciplinary hearings and even one suspension from school. One of the few highlights of her Academy experience was that she was a fast runner and was on the decathlon team.

MAQUIS ENDINGS
B'Elanna joined the Maquis and considers them not only friends, but family. Chakotay, her Maquis commanding officer, was also her mentor. He thinks she is the best engineer he has ever known and believes her skill level is so high that she could teach at the Academy. Their Maquis ship was destroyed soon after it was swept into the Delta Quadrantrant and all the Maquis were forced to integrate into Voyager's crew. After Voyager received letters from the Alpha Quadrant, B'Elanna was extremely dismayed to find the Maquis were virtually wiped out by the Cardassians with only a few "lucky ones" in prison.

CHIEF ENGINEER OF VOYAGER
B'Elanna does not have the full Starfleet training that each of the other senior officers has, but what she lacks in formal training she makes up with on the job training from the Maquis. Her superior skills were aided by Chakotay's faith, causing Kathryn to promote her to Lieutenant and to Voyager's Chief Engineer position.
She is in charge of the entire engine room, creating the power from the warpcore that propels Voyager closer to home. Beyond repairing any and all of the systems throughout the ship, she also plays doctor to Voyager's holographic Doctor and performs his diagnostic checkups. Two of her most notable accomplishments were inventing the "skeletal lock" for transport based on locking onto the minerals in the bone tissue. Also, she once built an automated sentient being. Her service on Voyager has been an impressive turnaround from her Maquis days and she has proven herself to be a worthy officer.

RELATIONSHIPS
B'Elanna has caught the eye of at least a few men on Voyager. She was once interested in Ensign Murphy and even long ago had a dream about being involved with Chakotay, but nothing ever happened. After spending several years developing a friendship, Tom asked B'Elanna for a date and although she turned him down, he continued to pursue her for over a year. During that year Freddy Bristow also developed a crush on her, but B'Elanna wasn't attracted to him. Ensign Vorik, a Vulcan, also became an admirer, noting her impressive technical skills, bravery, and sense of morality. B'Elanna was shocked when Vorik proposed to her because she wasn't interested in him. She was even more surprised when Vorik's Pon Farr set off an imbalance in her that caused her to want a mate. She selected Tom to mate with, who although he was still attracted to her, did not want to take advantage of her altered state of mind. B'Elanna confessed she was attracted to him, but Tom did not believe she meant it. Several months later, after Tom's continued flirtation with her, B'Elanna stopped pushing him away and admitted she was actually in love with him. They became a steady couple and have had a relatively smooth relationship thus far. They did receive a warning from Kathryn because they had been making a "public display of affection" and since then they have been trying to be a little more careful in public.

INTERESTS
She participates in many sports including hoverball, parrises squares, and is just learning snow skiing. She is quite competitive, even insisting on finishing a hoverball championship with a broken ankle. Tom has also encouraged her to do his Klingon martial arts program but B'Elanna did not enjoy it. B'Elanna enjoys warm, tropical holodeck settings. She is not very knowledgeable about twentieth century entertainment, but has seen "To Catch a Thief" a few times. She was once embarrassed by being caught reading a Klingon romance novel named "Women Warriors at the River of Blood". Chakotay has taught her to contact her animal guide but since she tried to kill the animal, it doesn't seem likely that she has a good relationship with it. B'Elanna also learned how to use Chakotay's medicine wheel to aid him if he is injured.
B'Elanna has overcome many of her hostile and rebellious ways to understand and appreciate her heritage. She has grown into a respected officer and has found her niche on Voyager and within Starfleet.
